About Us

The Mission

We want to outfit you in pride. Each design tells a story, while honoring the threads that create our identity. Heritage is something that defines us and we don't intend to dilute our identities in order to fit in.

When we speak of heritage we focus on indigenous roots. “Heritage” is defined as something that is inherited, passed down from previous generations. "In the case of “cultural heritage,” the heritage doesn’t consist of money or property, but of culture, values and traditions. Cultural heritage implies a shared bond, our belonging to a community. It represents our history and our identity; our bond to the past, to our present, and the future".

A keen sense of your heritage will help you to understand, in part, just who you are. "The yearning by many adolescents to “discover who they are”  and their importance or role in this world can be answered in the study of their heritage". We strongly believe that children that have not properly received their cultural inheritance don't blossom.

Our sales support advocacy work focused on criminal justice reform, public housing and public transportation in the South Bronx.

Our Products

Our core collection is Bodysuit. Our bodysuits are inspired by us. They address the challenges we as Latinos face when shopping while honoring who we are.

We use a premium cotton blend that is soft; more comfortable for babies. Our  bodysuits are available in sizes newborn to 3T. We hand print our bodysuits using non toxic, water based inks, in the South Bronx. We package each bodysuit in tissue and include a poem that our founder writes.

Our Designs

At Ojala Threads we understand that what our babies wear tell the world who they are, before they can speak. We don’t take this lightly. Our designs proudly reflect our Hispanic heritage and create the space for conversations inspired by then. We are hopeful that they will help parents, and grandparents, easily pass on to our youngest generation the best of us.

We also create pieces that are contemporary and modern. This makes our designs attractive to all ages. We're excited to offer pieces for adults, the home and even fur babies featuring our unique prints.

Our Material

We use a fuller cotton and spandex blend. The blend ensures a fit that responds to a baby’s shape without limiting movement or feeling rough against the skin. Our final blend is something we would want to be draped in, we know your baby will agree.

Our Sizing

Real babies have curves! To make things simpler we make our products larger. This means our customers spend less time guessing when shopping with us! We encourage you to buy the size that corresponds to the babies current age.

Our Vision

When choosing a canvas worthy of our heritage we didn’t want to cut corners. We knew it had to be soft. It had to be flexible. It had to hold our curvy babies comfortably. Our founder’s experience working on environmental resilience meant we couldn’t make this choice while ignoring the negative environmental impacts of the fashion industry. So we started with the purest canvas we could find, cotton.

Natural cotton is beige in color. Any other color is reached via bleaching and/ or sunlight, then dying. The dying of fabric negatively affects waterways and the communities that depend on those water sources. We chose white fabric to avoid introducing toxins into our fabric and the waterways surrounding our manufacturing partner. White fabric is safer, for our babies and environment.

Our Inks

We’ve seen first hand what babies do to their clothing. While it isn’t pretty, we wanted to make sure they could dribble, and nibble safely. Our designs are hand printed in NYC, using non toxic water-based inks. We don’t know what they taste like but as soon as our first customer starts talking we’ll let you know!

Our Heritage

We aim to authentically represent the complexities surrounding Hispanic/ Latin heritage. Incorporating indigenous heritage is core to our mission. The first collection of design honors the Taino. Future collections will similarly highlight other Indigenous peoples.

While outfitting babies is our passion, we consider it our responsibility to support our home, the Mott Haven neighborhood in the South Bronx. Visit our Community Responsibility page to see how we contribute! Ready to see our designs? Click Here
